Joyfull International Hotel Shanghai Reviews
Large and functional city hotel Oct 16, 2011
The Joyfull International hotel is located in the north west of Shanghai, right across the street from the Hongkou football stadium. Metroline 8 towards People's Square, runs right underneath the hotel. Line 3 towards the north Shanghai railway station lies on the other side of the road.
It's not so easy to spot the entrance from the street. The front side is under construction and the entrance is now on the back. Also the reception area is partly under construction.
First we got a room on the 9th floor, but as soon as I walked in, the stench of smoke came towards me. I had forgotten that in China, smoking is allowed nearly everywhere. I immediately went down again to change for a smoking room and I was pleasantly surprised by the rather good English skills of the receptionist. Some of the staff at reception speaks decent English, though not everyone.
Room 1003 was smelly too, but a lot better than the room we had before. It's a narrow room with twin beds, a small table with an armchair, a desk and a flat screen tv. There's internet, but it's wired. My Chinese friend borrowed me a router, but sadly we couldn't get it to work.
Even though this is a non-smoking floor, apparently the Chinese guests don't care and smoke anyway. Hence the stench. (One was even smoking in the elevator, underneath the non-smoking sign!!!)
The furniture in the room is rather worn out out and lacking paint, but fortunately all is working alright. There's a kettle and a minibar, but the minibar is empty. There's supposed to be a safe too, but in this room it is missing.
The bathroom is small but functional with a small yet clean shower, a sink and lots of little shampoos, soaps and lotions. There's a hairdryer too but not in the bathroom. It's lying in a drawer in the room.
The negative point is that our room was facing a giant and busy crossroad and with only single glazing, there's an extreme lot of noise coming from the street down below. Cars are honking constantly, the metro is passing by (overhead) and there's construction on the other side too with bulldozers starting pretty early in the morning.
Moreover the walls are really thin and you can hear load neighbours talking and laughing. Especially if they return late at night. So don't forget your earplugs!
The restaurant is supposed to be on the 2nd floor, but as that floor is completely under construction, it is now served on the 3rd floor, where the meeting rooms are.
There's a buffet with of course a large Asian food selection, but there is a fair selection of western items too. A chef is frying eggs, there's toast and jam and cereal too as well as fresh fruit. There's enough choice in order not to go hungry if you can't eat Asian for breakfast (like me).
Because breakfast is now improvised in what is supposed to be a meeting room, there are only large round tables to be shared with fellow guests. This means also slurping, burping and even smoking table mates to cope with....
There's also a lot of noice coming from the construction works downstairs, so don't expect a peacefull breakfast.
A positive feature is that the hotel was prepared to store our big luggage while we went on a week's trek with only a smaller backpack.
Upon our return we got room 903 on the smoking floor, but this time there was no smell... so we were lucky? The room was equal to the one we staid in the week before; only this one did have a safe and a filled minibar.
In general the Joyfull is a decent tourist class hotel and a good base for exploring Shanghai. We paid 383 RMB for a twin per night, which makes it good value for money. Breakfast was not included but could be added for 60RMB per person.
