Jopi Hostel Katowice Reviews
Affordable hostel for a short stay. Aug 14, 2010
This relatively cheap hostel is located at walking distance from Katowice Central Station. We were staying in a 2 person bedroom.
The room was a bit small, but very clean. As it was very small, it contained a bunk bed. The bed sheets were still in plastic on arrival (you make your bed yourself, which is no effort at all) all washed and pressed. A big plus are the lockers in the rooms. You lock them witch a key that is given to you at arrival. So you’re valuables are safe for free when you are out and about. Only a minor negative: As there are only blinds for window covering, the rooms are not very dark.
Bathroom and Shower
The bathroom and shower we had available at our hallway were very clean and tidy. It looked as though they had it installed recently as it looked very new. No negatives here.
Breakfast, dinner, etc..
The hostel is equipped with a nice and modern kitchen. Here you can prepare your dinner in the evening if you want to. Everything you need to do so is available. In the morning you can have your breakfast with the bread and some jam or cheese the hostel provides. Same as tea and coffee. A toaster is available. For just one stay it will do fine, but for longer stays it will be wise to do some grocery shopping of your own as there is no juice or cereal etc. A big plus here is the big refrigerator in the kitchen where you can store all your edible goodies.
The receptionists we encountered were all very nice and helpful. As it is sometimes hard to get around in Katowice with just English, it was no problem with them. They are available at all times at the reception desk and will answer all your questions as good as they can.
Between the kitchen and the reception desk a small but cozy leisure room is available. Here you can read or watch some TV on a comfortable couch. As there is hardly any book on the bookshelf, bring your own readable items and you’re fine!
One negative is the noisiness of the hostel. As it is a hostel and some noise can be expected I was woken early in the morning by very loud activities outside. Another thing is the doorbell. As you don’t have a key to the front porch you have to press a doorbell which can be heard very loudly in the rooms and thus can be very annoying when trying to get to sleep. Although there are some doors between the hallways to drown some of the noise the doorbell’s piercing trough everything. And as there is a 24/7 reception people are calling at the door 24/7. So a big advice here is: bring earplugs for a good night’s sleep.
As the hostel can only be reached by, first pressing a (noisy) doorbell where after the door will be opened by the receptionists and second, the door to the actual hostel will only be opened after being checked by video camera to see who’s calling no person with bad intentions will get near the hostel easily. We arrived back at the hostel late at night by foot and I felt pretty safe. Of course this is very subjective, but I didn’t see any strange activities going on and there are no bars nearby with all the negatives it usually brings. But of course this is only an impression of a few days.
Jopi Hostel is a cheap, clean and friendly hostel which can be very enjoyable when prepared. Bring some earplugs, buy your own breakfast and you’re fine. As the rooms are a bit small you will probably feel a bit enclosed after a few days so for short stays it is recommended.
