A teensy town with a population barely above 1,000, Johnson City is indeed the home town of Lyndon Baines Johnson (it was founded by one of his relatives). Unfortunately there isn’t much to see here, despite the signs broadcasting presence of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which boasts his boyhood homestead and even his grandparent’s log cabin. However, there isn’t much that is engaging at the site and you would be much better served by visiting the splendid LBJ Library in Austin – 50 miles west.
Technically positioned within Texas Hill Country, Johnson City doesn’t exude the charm of nearby Fredericksburg or Kerrville. Regardless, Johnson City does retain the hardscrabble vibe that resonates through much of Texas and if you put down stakes here you’ll only be twenty-five miles from Luckenbach, where everybody is somebody…
