Johnson City Vacation Guide
Johnson City is one of the Tri-Cities, located in Northeast Tennessee. With her sister cities of Kingsport and Bristol, Johnson City is a fascinating destination. Storytelling, bluegrass music and beautiful sites (and sights) abound in the area. Near the Appalachian trail, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Cherokee National Forest, the town is filled with green spaces.
The International Storytelling Festival and Bristol Motor Speedway are the big draws in the area, but there are plenty of great things to do outside of these weekends. Some great barbecue restaurants (Ridgewood, Dixie, and the Firehouse) and the Depot Street Brewery offer great local tastes.
Near the end of October, 2009, a rock slide closed I-40, forcing traffic onto the new I-26 route to/from Asheville, NC. With this, more people may be looking at Johnson City as a potential destination or just a stop along an Interstate drive. Give yourself some time and obey the speed limits.

I flew from Washington DC to Longbeach CA then my immediate family and I piled into a minivan for a superfast attempt at crossing the US. I took pictures, most of which are from the back seat of the tinted window minivan, but some of which are through the windshield and a few are actually from times we stopped. Enjoy.
