Johnnie's - Italian Beef

When in Chicago, it's obligatory to try an Italian Beef sandwich (if you eat meat). And the best according to thousands of locals, as well as Time Out Chicago, is Johnnie's Italian Beef. Johnnie's is technically located in Elmwood Park, Chicago, a small suburb that borders Chicago. It's a 11 mile drive west of downtown Chicago or an easy bike ride. You can also take the Green Line Subway from downtown and then 1 bus followed by a 6 block walk. It's worth it. Aside from the Italian Beef, they also have the area's best Italian Lemon Ice. On weekends during the summer months, long lines form outside of Johnnie's, but they move quickly. There are several table outside as well as about 10 stools inside the small "take out" restaurant. Google this place and you'll find many mentiions of them. Dennis Rodman turned Carmen Electra on to this place and she stops in when she's in town. But more importantly, people who know a good Italian Beef sandwich, love this place. Make sure you know what you want when it's your turn to order and have your cash in hand. Kind of like the Soup Nazi episdoe in Seinfeld. If you like Frank Lloyd Wright, go to Oak Park after your Johnnie's stop. All of the Frank Lloyd Wright marvels are only 2 miles from Johnnie's! As is Concordia College, Dominican University and downtown Oak Park which is worth a visit if you're in the area.
