Jockey's Ridge State Park Jul 28, 2012
Jockey's Ridge State Park has the largest sand dune formations on the U.S. east coast. There is plenty of parking at the visitor center which has a boardwalk that leads out to the dunes. People leave their shoes by the overlook to walk on the sand. I went at mid-day and it was just too hot for much exploring. The best times to go are probably early in the morning and late in the afternoon to avoid the heat. There is a hang gliding rental place at the visitor center that also gives lessons.

The park is right off Route 158 in Nags Head. You can also park at the Jockey's Ridge Crossing shopping center (look for Kitty Hawk Kites and the Kitty Hawk Surf Co.) and cross 158 to step right onto the dunes (there is a crossing signal to stop traffic). Apparently there are some trails on the other side of the park along Roanoke Sound, though I did not head out that far. It's a fun place to visit to get a sense of what the area was like when the Wright brothers conducted their flying experiments over a century ago.
