Jinotega is remote, located in north central Nicaragua. It is located in the department of Jinotega and is the capital of the department. This department borders Honduras which lies to the north. The town sits within a valley surrounded by moutains dominated by coffee plantations.
It has been witness to many wars and battles from Sandino, to Somoza and later the Sandinistas. The constant conflicts have inhibited development of the town. The main road into Jinotega from Matagalpa is horrible.
