Jimbaran, Bali Reviews

Jun 30, 2007
Jimbaran Beach offers "dining on the beach," which is basically rows of open restaurants right on the sandy beach and is a wonderful activity after a day of exploring other places in Bali. Better yet, make sure you get there just before sunset. The dining place is so close to the water that you can feel the sea water on your feet, but far enough so that you don't feel like you go swimming while eating! :) When you dine, all you can see in front of you is the picturesque sunset. You hear the sound of waves breaking slowly and nocturnal creatures singing. When the sun is finally set, the horizon is lit up with the city lights of Denpasar and from afar you can see the planes coming in and out. The evening breeze is as cool as can be; you'll not be sorry.

Things to watch out, however :)
- restaurant owners will come to you once they know you're coming. So, just be calm, take it easy, and put on your game face like you know what you're doing. All of the beach restaurants in Jimbaran are alike, pricewise and contentwise, so you can never go wrong choosing one of them. However, make sure you choose the restaurant that has a spot in the middle of the beachline. Therefore you will get the best view of the sunset, not other people's backs!

- the seafood is alive for you to choose. They are on display in huge water tanks. The restaurant will cook your choice of seafood for you right on the spot. So, it's fresh. But make sure you are clear with the price (and don't hesitate to negotiate price, it's a custom there) and how you want them to cook for you.

- some street musicians will probably come around your table and sing for you. Don't feel compelled to tip them. If you don't want to be bothered by them, you can just raise your hand and politely say "maaf" (sorry) to them. I made a mistake by tipping one street musician for a song he sang for me, and soon enough a bunch of others came to sing at my table!

- there's no obligation to give service tips in Indonesian restaurants because those fees are included in the bill. So, just enjoy your seafood dinner and the beautiful sunset.

Have fun traveling! Thanks for reading.
