Jennie's Diner Ronks Reviews
Don’t waffle on stopping here Dec 19, 2013
When John proposed Jennie’s Diner I had one question for him. Do they serve chicken & waffles? I probably haven’t ordered this fare in twenty-five years, but it’s presence on the menu has consistently validated which roadside diners are worthy. John thought it was on the menu, without being positive, but he had been here before and vouched for its authenticity, so I lived on the edge and risked it.
Of course the very first thing I spotted when we sat down at our booth was the specials list, itemizing CHICKEN & WAFFLES as a Tuesday special! Game on.
I honestly had little doubt as we pulled in. Jennie’s is one of those vintage silver railroad car diners, and seeing it was open 24 hours daily reinforced this was the real deal (and I’m sure gets them a lot of business since this is the heart of Amish Country, where it can be difficult finding a place that’s open on Sunday or after-hours). As if I needed further proof, there was a classic coin operated jukebox at each booth table.
The real measure is the grub and service, and Jennie’s delivered on both fronts. Our waitress was fun and friendly, promptly presenting us with our orders – a beef gyro for me and a triple-decker sandwich for John. The prices are quite reasonable, a bargain when the heaping portions are placed before you. My gyro was truly delicious: quite beefy and not drenched in sauce. The best part is the pickle – thank heaven for good roadside diners!
