The local inn Sep 17, 2014
After we have been looking at the famous stones next to the church we are getting a bit hungry. Fortunately most old Danish villages have one thing in common - there is always an inn next to the church. Maybe it is related to an old Danish saying claiming it is better to sit at the inn and think about the church than sitting in the church and think about the inn. Jelling is no different from other old towns - there is an old inn next to the church. So we go there and have a view of the church and the monuments around the church while having lunch.

The inn is pretty big and it used to have rooms for rent on the second floor - unfortunately the inn is somewhat in disrepair and the owners tell us they want to start renting out rooms but unfortunately they haven’t got the necessary money to do the repair of the second floor.

The menu is a pretty standard menu for Danish inns and the prices are quite reasonable for Denmark. The service is friendly and since there aren’t many guests on a day midweek out of season service is fairly quick as well. I go for a Danish lunch classic - stjerneskud or shooting star which is a collection of different fish dishes on a plate with bread. The fish is probably better value than the chicken salad which has some pretty dry chicken inside it.

The place is an ok place to stop for a meal if you are visiting the monuments during mealtime - but hardly worth hanging around waiting for lunch if it isn’t the right time of the day.

Beautiful heritage building but less average food Sep 17, 2014
Jelling Kro was built in 1820 and it was a Royal Privileged in 1842 and the place was protected under the heritage agency in 1947 together with the Church and the burial mounds.

The building used to be a hotel and restaurant, however it currently open as a restaurant only and no room available if you want to stay there. The place is huge and quite interesting to wonder around outside the restaurant area. However I felt spooky when I walk alone wonder inside the building. It has a nice patio outside and a large conference rooms.

The owner is very friendly and chatty and service quite fast, unfortunately the food was not good. I had chicken salad with Guatemala sauce. The chicken was cold and dry – it seems the chicken was a leftover chicken from the previous day (maybe) – just not nice. The Guatemala sauce does not have much taste on it, and too little for the salad in the plate. The price is very reasonable.

Personally, I would not go back to this place since the food was not nice, but okay for drink if you are in the area.
