Jeep Safari of Shivika Lake Hotel
Jeep Safari of Shivika Lake Hotel Ranakpur Reviews
Avoid Jeep Safari's of the Shivika Lake Hotel Sep 03, 2010
Although this hotel has an extremely nice manager and they also offer various trekkings that might be good value for money, I suggest you stay away from their jeep safari. Below you'll find our experiences.
"The hotel's manager had told us that we would get a 2,5 hour safari. He could not guarantee that we would see a leopard (which live in this area) but we would definitely see crocodiles, wild boars and bears. Well, that sounded promising enough for us to book. What a disappointment it turned out to be. We arrived back at the hotel after 2 hours and 15 minutes, half an hour of which was spent driving towards the next village go get gasoline and back. Another 45 minutes were spent driving back over the main road to the hotel from the reserve. The hour that remained was filled with about 45 minutes of driving without stopping, straight through the reserve, where we only saw 3 peacocks and 2 antelopes. No crocodile, no bear, no boar, though it sure was boring. We'd seen more different animals in Rantambhore for less money! The remaining 15 minutes were a stop at the foot of a hill we could climb to a small and unimpressive Durga temple, although the view was excellent.
We were already far from amused since we had paid 1300 rupee for this. For that kind of money you can hire a car and driver for 2 days! But what really pissed me off was when they wanted to charge us for the water bottles they gave us at the start of the tour. On the way back to the hotel we came across the hotel manager, who asked us how the tour had been. When we told him our opinion that it really wasn't value for money he suggested that we'd come by his office and discuss it. Maybe he could arrange a discount with 'the boss' since he only 'charges what he'd been told to charge'. Remarkable how people take your money in this country but not the responsibility to deliver quality that comes with it.
When we would later come back the driver refused to give a refund since he's been driving 'the regular route'. Complaints about the time he spent getting gasoline in the next village and the lack of 'guaranteed animals' did not help. He still refused to cough up the dough, after which the manager gave us 200 rupee from 'his own pocket'. I've seen this facade before. All I can suggest to visitors of Ranakpur, steer away from any jeep safaris offered by Shivika Lake Hotel. The manager is a really nice guy, but this simply is unacceptable.
