Al Ain, United Arab Emirates
Jebel Hafeet Al Ain Reviews
ever have the urge to drive up a huge rock? Feb 11, 2011
Jebel Hafeet is one of the highest points in the UAE and I visited it on a recent trip to al ain.
First thing about it is that it is a huuuuuuge rock, around 1300 meters tall (taller than the burj khalifa). Anyhow it is known to offer great views of al ain and the vast deserts around it. Unluckily for me it was kind of cloudy out, guess I'll have to come back again. So I chose to visit it, and it is free to enter. The only problem is that you can't walk to the top of it, so you need a car.
The first thing about this place is that there is a huge park below it called the mezzaritte greens, or something like that. It has springs and picnic areas among other things.
Once you pass through the green area you will hopefully find the road going to the top of the rock. This is a hell of a journey, espicially since it is under remodelling right now, so there are a large amount of very narrow roads.
Also if you do this don't take a taxi, driving up the road is half the fun.
The road is steep. How steep you ask? Its steeper than a loan you take from a hobo with a baseball bat. Actually its 8 % grade most of the way.
Driving up the road I thought my car was going to give out. There are several areas on the side to park and take pictures. After around 20 minutes I made it to the top. On top is a huge parking lot and these dudes were rocking out to indian music. There is a resturant and lots of people checking out the views. The place is very popular with locals who picnic at the top. In fact I didn't see another group of european types there.
There is also a hotel on top of it that you can stay at, and some sort of "private residence", it might be a royal palace of some sort but not sure.
And the way down... I hope your car has good breaks!
Update: According to Edmunds.com the road up to the top is the worlds greatest driving road... hahaha have fun
