Japanese Caves Tomohon Reviews
Marks of the Japanese occupation:the Japanese caves. Sep 14, 2009
Until 1942,Indonesia,known as the Netherlands East Indies was colonised by the Dutch who declared war on Japan in December 1941.A month later, the Japanese attacked Manado, the capital of north Sulawesi and settled there.Indonesia was a source of raw materials and especially of oil.
The Japanese troops, sometimes seen as liberators, forced the local people to dig in a very hard rock tunnels and extensive network of caves in the area of Tondano lake for using them as supplies storage(water,food,ammunitions...) and shelters against air raids.
As they are often filled with bats, few of them are opened to visit.
