As springtime warmed, the buds of trees began to slowly blossom and tint the landscape green. Eager owners anxiously prepared for the approaching summer season by scrubbing their houseboats with bristle brushes, brooms, and buckets of lake water. Docks were painted and Dal Lake took on a fresh appearance.
Four large swim-boats were positioned onto the middle of the lake. They had the same hull and flat-top roof as the massive houseboats but no walls, their sides open. Swimme...

I arrived in Jammu about 4.40am and took taxi to the bus station on the hunt for a shared jeep. Managed to sort one out - the price is 350 rupees for anyone making this trip, it hasn't changed lately :)
Took the Jeep at 6am after a chai, and that's about it for Jammu!

Srinagar was an interesting experience. the army guy who looked super angry tried to get me to go back on the plane before i even set foot on kashmiri concrete. he was like shouting at the stewardess in unknown language and pointing at me - probably something along the lines of "get this white girl out of here." or something. well eventually after pointing at the word srinagar on my ticket he gave up and gruffly pointed for me to wander in front of runways to get to the arrivals hall. then of...

Took me almost 10 days to get here from Delhi, mostly because I stayed for a week in Vashisht (next to Manali). The drive from Manali to Leh was crazy, 23 hours in a Jeep, cramped with 11 more people inside, smoking, and cold weather. The driver fell asleep too many times in the last hours and it got to be really scary. Other than that, the ride was amazing, beautiful scenary, very high passes (the highest is around 5350 meters).
Leh itself is a beautiful city, sitting on a plaque at 35...

Kashmir is the most northern part of India. It's been a disputed territory for years but the recent troubles have subsided considerably and as long as you take sensible precautions, you'll be fine. Staying on a houseboat is magical. Travelling into the mountains serene ... it's a beautifully lush valley and I can't wait to go back!

On Sunday morning we flew into Srinagar - that has got to be rated as one of the best flights with views! Flying over the Himalayas is spectacular, what a beautiful view!
I arrived at Dal Lake in the afternoon, and was dropped off at the house boat I would be staying on. It was fab, lovely wood carvings, not something like I have ever seen before. I spent a lot of time seeing the market, the floating market, the botancial gardens, Srinagar town etc and the Kasmiri people are very handsome/pr...

There's some stuff to do in Leh itself, but not tons. The main activity seems to be using Leh as a starting point for other trips -- trekking, jeep safaris, whitewater rafting, etc. Whitewater rafting caught Anita's fancy -- she'd never done it before (I'd done it once and loved it), and the idea of saying we went whitewater rafting in the Himalayas was very appealing.
The day had an auspicious beginning -- Tenzin, the owner of the agency that made all the arrangements -- showed ...

Hi Friends
As you know Tracy and i are doing our own thing at the moment, which means im on a hired 500cc Royal enfield designed in 1950 and build up to the present day. The gear change and rear brake are on the "wrong" side which is interesting in the many emergency stops you have to make. I am with Adam and Danny from England who are riding RTW on thier BMWs, two great guys who spend alot of time waiting for me me to chug along behind them.
We have travelled from Manali in Northern I...
