Good Pizza But Employees Hate Tourists! Sep 13, 2013
It's a shame the employees here are so rude because I absolutely loved my freshly-prepared pizza. The food itself is about a 4 star but the rudeness from the staff has forced me to bump my rating down to a 2 star. All 4 employees we dealt with were absolutely nasty in all respects -- I don't know if they have a general disdain for all tourists or what but they were treating other foreigners the same way. I guess they subscribe to the belief that since we are tourists they don't have to provide friendly or prompt service because they'll probably never see us again.
The restaurant itself is charming and cozy; ask to sit upstairs because the lovely windows provide a sweeping, picturesque panorama of the hills surrounding Assisi. The restaurant has an extensive pizza menu so we thought we'd both order a pizza so we could get in and out quickly. This is where the trouble started.
First, it took nearly 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our presence at the table. I know Italians don't like to rush when dining but that was a bit ridiculous. Pizzas are, as a rule, fast and quick. It took over 90 minutes after finally getting to place our order for us to get our pizzas -- our server even said he lost our order and offered no apologies. Several tables ate and left by the time our food FINALLY arrived.
The final insult was when we went down to the register to pay -- the man at the counter was SUPER rude and hateful. So arrogant and just generally unpleasant. Look, I know Americans are viewed with disdain in other parts of the world, but my husband and I speak decent Italian and try really hard to blend in and respect the local culture. We aren't loud and brash "typical Americans" that you sometimes see in Europe (believe me, we saw our fair share while on our trip)!
Assisi is a tourist town. It's gorgeous and lovely but it has an overall "fake" Disney-esque feel. All of the businesses there exist to overcharge tourists. I love Italy and I love Italians but the only rude Italians I have ever encountered during my years of traveling to the country were all in Assisi!
As much as I enjoyed the pizza here, I would not recommend that you patronize this restaurant. Vote with your wallet and eat somewhere else until Jamme Ja realizes that they need to be POLITE to all tourists if they want to stay in business.
