Not much to look at, but nice to look from. Jalapenos did not strike us as a quality Mexican joint when we first sat down. Mismatched, worn tables and chairs were strewn across the dining area, quite a few being empty except for piles of dirty dishes. Then again, this was dinner hour during the Hangout, so perhaps they had been dealing with an unusually heavy rush?

The first opinion changer was beer prices. Since we had just checked out of Hangout and its $7 charge for a sixteen ounce Bud Light, the evening special of $1 PBR drafts sounded awesome. The menu was fairly broad and the prices quite reasonable, you’d expected them to boost charges while the festival was on.

John and I were both eyeing the chili rellenos, but since he ordered them I went with a salad that was primed with chicken and beef (plus salsa and guacamole). I thought my salad was okay, and John enjoyed his rellenos. Though it wasn’t top shelf Mexican, inexpensive prices and comparisons to the fare being offered within the festival earned Jalapenos a passing grade.

The eatery sits a few streets back from the beach and accessing it is a bit odd – you have to go up to the fourth floor from a parking lot. Once you are up there, you may want to sit on their outdoor deck, which commands a convincing view of the beach from its lofty heights. The service was not expert, but not awful and exceptionally friendly. If you’re looking for general good times and some cheap Mexican eats, Jalapenos should get you to the promised land.

Very good chili rellenos, dollar draft beers, great waitress (cute too)taking care of us. Some young ruffians passing a leffie in the stairwell outside gestured to me with an extended middle finger while Vance observed the interaction with a look that may have been amusement, or maybe not. The place may not be everybodys cup of tea, but I liked it just fine!
