Jaisalmer Vacation Guide
Situated in the desert in western Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is a place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
Much smaller and quieter than the likes of Jodhpur and Jaipur, Jaisalmer is unique in that much of the town is built inside the fort; indeed, it is reputed to be the world's only 'living' fort. The houses in the fort are built about 500 years ago.
Within the walls of the fort the streets are narrow, which means you get little of the hustle and bustle of Indian traffic. You still get the occasional cow wandering through, however. The resulting experience is relaxing, and if you choose a hotel with a roof terrace, then you can sit taking tea, or enjoying a meal, looking out over the desert from atop the walls of the fort. Sunset over the desert can be magnificent.
Outside the fort's walls, the town continues. There is a large tank (pond) where you can hire pedalboats.
Jaisalmer is the best place to organise camel treks in the desert. The trips, which last from a days to several days in length, allow you to get out into the desert, and to experience something of desert life: sleeping under the stars (so many stars), preparing food over a camp fire, and dropping in at desert villages along the way. Whilst camels are not the most comfortable form of transport in the world, it does have its compensations. There are many operators in town who can arrange the trips.

Continuing about the mosquitoes. It was really nice to sleep under the stars, but I think I only slept 1 or 2 hours. The rest of the time I was busy with killing the little annoying animals! They didn't bite me much, but just the sound of them is enough to keep me awake. But it was good for taking …

Ganesh Ganesh meets me at the airport. Ganesh looks disconcertingly like my friend Alex - they could be different colored versions of the same person! And Ganesh has the same lingering, calm way about him. I'm completely weirded out and spend the the next few days trying in vain not to stare; to…
