Built in the late sixteenth century by the victorious Mughals, this mahal (palace) was meant to signify and confirm their victory over the local people. This is why a garrison and citadel were also built alongside the mahal. Although the Mughals were famous for constructing beautiful places such as the Taj mahal, it is unfortunate that Jahangir mahal is not one of their finer works too. The whole site feels like a bit of an empty ghost town, and there is very little opportunity to imagine the grandeur and historic beauty of the palace. The nice thing about the site is the freedom you get – you can wander around everywhere and perhaps even get lost in the corridors and network of rooms. Small traces (bits of decoration here and detailed woodwork there) hint at historic grandeur, but there is a notable lack of information about the life of the Mughal rulers that live here. If you happen to visit Orchha for its quiet charm, then visiting this place will take very little time. however, I would not visit Orchha especially for this!
