A Fantastic Tour, Well Worth Your $15 May 29, 2012
Years ago, a man from Spain and a woman from Italy met in Puerto Viejo and fell in love. They were both biologists. After living together for some time in Europe, they decided to move back to the place where they first fell in love and start a new life there. When the locals found out that their new neighbors were two highly educated biologists, they began to bring injured animals to them to be taken care of. This, in a nutshell, is how the Jaguar Rescue Center was born.

The Jaguar Rescue Center is a place full of stories. Every animal there has a story, and the story may lead to a happy ending or it may be quite sad. If you want to get up close and personal with Costa Rican wildlife and to learn how the local society interacts with its fauna, this is an incredible place to visit. Take the tour, hear the stories and enjoy the experience. You will be fascinated by the animals and you won’t realize how much you are learning along the way.

I don’t want to ruin any of the stories for you but I will tell you some of what you can expect to see on your tour - monkeys with an open door policy, lovesick owls, hawks who haven’t had the best luck with people, sloths who have learned bad habits (and are incidentally the cutest goddamn things you will ever see in your lives), a vicious princess, a poorly behaved jungle cat, a fearless deer and more. The tour will bring you within a safe distance of all the animals at the center and knowledgeable guides will give you the backstory and probable future of all the inhabitants. In addition to the animals being rehabilitated there is an extensive collection of snakes, insects and spiders. The Spanish owner of the JRC is a herpetologist and likes to keep his work close. Learning about the snakes is very helpful if you plan on doing any hiking in Costa Rica.

If the pictures don’t convince you to go then consider that your 15$ admission goes directly towards helping the center rehabilitate as many animals as possible, and to care for the ones who are beyond rehabilitation. The center runs predominantly with a volunteer work force and all the volunteers I spoke with had great things to say about both the volunteer experience and the integrity with which the center is run. It is something not to be missed if you are visiting Puerto Viejo.

The JRC is a doable but long walk from the town center of Puerto Viejo (took us about 45 minutes) but a very reasonable bike or taxi ride. Look for the sign on the right side of the road as you are heading south. I hear that at times the tours may sell out so make sure to sign up early.

Do you know if you can go to this alone or do you have to be part of a tour group?

Don't Miss this Fabulous Experience Jul 12, 2011
Just 10 minutes outside of the town Puerto Viejo , you will find this amazing animal rescue center on Playa Chiquita. It is created and run by this lovely woman from Spain and her husband. Not only will you have the unforgettable hands-on experience of playing with monkeys and feeding baby sloths, your admission of $14 will help support the Jaguar Rescue Center towards the continued rescue and protection of the many animals found in the carribean coast jungle. (There are wildcats, toucans, frogs, lizards and snakes too.) Most rescue centers do not let you touch the animals, so this is truly a rare opportunity. The animals, by the way, are returned to the wild as soon as they are old enough or healthy enough.

After your tour of the center, be sure to catch a few waves as well as lunch on the pristine beach of Playa Chiquita. A great day awaits you!!

ALSO: If you read this and are definitely going, the center always needs evaporated goats milk donations....they sell it at Walmart.
