Jade Santa Barbara Reviews
Apr 28, 2007
We wanted a nice dining experience in Santa Barbara, but even after hours of scouring the Chowhound message boards, it seemed that our choices were limited. Most of the suggestions were either incredibly expensive or had mixed reviews, and we were wary of spending too much money on a potential tourist trap along State St. Finally, we settled on Jade, an Asian fusion place on State St, but far away from the tourist center, near the northwest of town.
The restaurant is pretty unassuming from the outside, and even on the inside the decor is pretty simple. The food, however, speaks for itself. It's not extraordinary, but it's very good, and for the price it is an incredible bargain. Most of the entrees are from $10-$15. For our appetizer we split the Mini Crab Taco Entree. It consisted of avocado, tomato, and crab meat inside of a small taco shell. The crispy taco shell complemented the soft avocado/crab meat filling perfectly, and the combination was both tasty and refreshing. For my entree I ordered the Kalua Pork, one of Jade's most popular dishes. The pork is shredded and marinated in a Hawaiian type of BBQ sauce and incredibly tender. Again, not extraordinary, but very good.
The service is also very good. Our waiter seemed like a genuine foodie, and even gave us suggestions for cheap, good places to eat in LA. He was considerate without being annoying or overbearing, and his expertise added to the dining experience. The chef even came out at the end of our meal to ask if everything was okay.
I've spent twice as much on entrees at restaurants here in Los Angeles only to be disappointed, but Jade delivers on all fronts. Definitely recommended if you want some reasonably priced but good food in the Santa Barbara area.
