Not a Resort, but not a Sham! Feb 23, 2010
Jabal Shams Resort offers several options at the top of the world in Oman. There isn’t much to do here but hike, so I suspect any candidates for residency will find the accommodations quite sufficient. You have your basic hotel room, which we enjoyed, but the other choices are a private chalet (each with its own terrace) or you can rough it in an Arabian tent. Although the tents have shared bathroom facilities, each one also has its own fireplace. It gets quite chilly up here at night, so that is a welcome feature.

Our rooms were spacious with western toilets and incredible views. The setting of Jabal Shams Resort may be its grandest asset. They intentionally positioned the rooms to afford glorious views of sunset over the mountains, but if you care to stretch your legs and walk for a few minutes you can’t help but stumble into even more incredible vistas.

The restaurant is a rather pretty structure with full glass walls in two directions so you won’t miss out on those stunning views even as you dine. The food was standard buffet fare, but served family style at your table. A further bonus is that they do not object to drinking alcohol in the restaurant (of course you have to bring your own).

A casual, enjoyable place to base yourself for exploring the mountains of Oman. The only issue I had during my stay was when I went next door to visit my companions and a couple goats tried to follow me inside, lol. The wandering goats enhance the rustic charm of this low key lodge in the sky which I found particularly refreshing.
Arabian Tents are an option at Jab…

Great review..... always fun to read about motels / resorts that are a little different.... really love the idea of the tents with the fireplaces.

It made me laugh that goats tried to come into the room .... They are such social little things.... they'll come in and party with you if you let them!!!

great review.... sylvia

You will sometimes find the Jabal Shams resort spelled Jebel but it is common to see translations from Arabic spelled differently.

A good review of these accomodations can be found on Vances Oman blog so I will limit the review to some brief commentary and a few pictures.

The views are outstanding, the restaurant is adaquate, and goats will chew your laundry if you let it lay around outside.
