Shanghai High Life! Nov 16, 2014
When you think of Shanghai or wonder about it - the bustle of activity, the high rise buildings and sense of something sensational perhaps comes to mind. At the JW Marriott there is enough to satisfy all these imaginings. Here you can live the High Life, literally, as it is rises 60 floors and is the tallest building in Puxi. For tourism purposes there is Puxi and Pudong facing each other across the Huangpu River. The Pudong area has taller buildings such as Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and others you may have seen from in famous, yet ever changing, Shanghai skyline.

For tourism, Puxi is really where you want to stay anyway, and what better way than the tallest building around that area? Nearby is People's Square Park, Nanjing Pedestrian Road, and some walking that way to the famous Bund area. Yuyuan Garden area is not far afield either. In the very vicinity of the hotel there are plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy. Across the street and a short walk you can find tour bus companies that run from there (City Sightseeing being one).

Though 60 floors, the floors below 38 are used for other purposes, rented apartment style housing (with full kitchens), spa, business rooms, etc. Reception at this hotel begins on the 38th floor, which seems strange at first, but realize the benefit of the views when coming and going. The reception/lobby on the 38th floor is more like a lounge and views of Shanghai come at you from many directions. In fact, this floor deviates from the main base by 45 degrees, evident from the Vs seen on the exterior which serve as a buttress for the building design in this orientation change.

The rooms themselves are not overly large, but spacious enough, comfortable and furnished well. Not what I would call fancy, but cozy enough. The bathrooms are quite nice with a glass door shower separate from the bathtub. Plenty of freebies like combs, toothbrush/paste, sewing kit and the like. The water is nice and hot, extra hot if you like to generate some steam, which I like but don't often get in hotel showers. Bottled water is provided, there is coffee available to make as well. Overall, this makes for a very nice and comfortable stay here.

I had a room on the 54th floor, facing People's Park, Nanjing Road and the Bund Beyond, so the views were simply spectacular. Well, that is, when the weather & pollution allowed anyway. As hotels go, this was probably one of the top 5 views I have ever had from a hotel. From this height you can really see the whole city expanding beyond in the daytime, and at night it is all lit up with a different ambiance to enjoy. It's an expensive hotel, and I had US government rate ~$240/night, but if you can afford it, this may be one of the top places (literally) to stay in the Puxi area of Shanghai to live the High Life!

Good one, Lauryl, and quite a catch phrase! The per diem for Shanghai is actually $237, so without actuals I had to fork over the extra $3/night myself. Still, it's good hotels like this accommodate Gov't per diems.

Very nice review and deserved feature. Congrats. (Not sure how I missed it before today since I spent so much time on this blog?) Ah well.

ps ~ The military should try advertising (recruiting) with the hook words you just used on all of us... 'it's expensive... but with US govt rate...' Sign me up. ;P

Top up your next posh stay at the JW TSS May 20, 2010
If you had one night to stay in Shanghai and you want a view of the old town - this is your hotel! Hotel level starts in the middle of the building as the bottom floors are for the Maserati dealership and office rentals. My guest room had amazing decor with bamboo themes. The night view was immaculate as the city never sleeps. You have a choice of soaking yourself in the soaker tub or take a quick shower to continue your night with the amazing night life. Hotel staff were friendly but service can be a bit slow with language barriers. The hotel bar has a nice atmosphere for business meetings. Heck, all successful business done in China are either over a meal or a drink. Hotel restaurant offers buffet breakfast with a taste of west and east cuisine. I didn't get a chance to visit the swimming pool or the gym as there's just too much to do in this city of glam!
