Perhaps better for families than solo travellers Jul 25, 2015
In trying to be both a Hostel and a Hotel, JUFA Salzburg (it’s part of a national chain apparently) doesn’t quite do it if you’re after an environment that you would normally associate with the former. Indeed, the dorms are shoved down in the basement as a tacked-on afterthought.

The reception area – complete with convenience store and bar, no less – is definitely chainy hotel rather than unique hostel, and more often than not kids are running around the area and screaming; a situation resulting from the very extensive lounge area that sprawls across the ground floor. The dorms, clean and spacious as they are, do feel rather stale, and you have to pay for lockers (kept outside the rooms). There’s also a definite shortage of showers on hand for how many people there are in the dorms.

On the plus side, there is a generous buffet breakfast included in the price, you get great views of Salzburg’s fort from the café terrace outside, the WiFi is super-fast and, if you are travelling with kids, there’s plenty to keep them amused such as the games room in the basement and a playroom for the very young. For me, though, it was a bland and OK choice, and not somewhere I’d stay in again if I returned to Salzburg.

Large hostel, many families, impersonal attention Jul 23, 2011
It's the largest hostel I've stayed at, there were many families with little kids, which can be annoying for a lone traveller. Not much of a fun spot, though the do play the Sound of Music every night, which was excellent for me, as it was the reason for the trip to Salzburg.

Being a large hostel, the staff was always overloaded at the front desk and it was always full of guests, so the line to get their attention was long. Once you reached them, though, they were friendly and helpful.

It's not hard to find, it's either a long-walking distance or a short-bus ride from the main downtown historical area. And the public bus service is excellent, even though the names of the streets and stops are impossible to pronounce.

The beds are clean and so are the bathrooms, but the thing with having too many people share common showers is that it's steamed and wet pretty much all the time. And because of the steam the windows are left open and it gets really cold and uncomfortable to take a shower.

When I arrived another person was sleeping in my assigned bed (they are numbered), and even another one was using my assigned locker (also numbered), but I didn't complain, it wasn't worth it.

Bottom line: I would recommend it, overall it's a nice place to stay.
