JR's Barbeque Culver City Reviews
awesome bbq Apr 25, 2008
JR's is a homey place that serves bbq really, really well. as soon as you walk in, you can smell that smokey-ness, which permeates the room. you know that they mean business.
let me start with the service. Robert (the "R" in JR") is part owner and part chef of this hole in the wall (his mom is the other half). He takes pride in his cooking and it shows. He will also personally seat you and take your order and is more than happy to chat with you about bbq-ing, his travels (which he loves to do), and his mom's cobblers.
on to the food. we ordered a full slab of baby back ribs between 2 people. the meat was tender and lean. none of that fatty stuff. it was so good. then, the sauce. it was so smokey and red and rich. we tried both medium and spicy. i was more partial to the smoky while my friend was partial to the medium. either way, can't really go wrong.
Robert also suggested that the regular pork ribs should be tried -- so he gave us a sample. while the regular ribs were good, i found the baby back to be more tender. but that was just me. both were excellent.
we each ordered 2 bowls of mac n cheese -- which were served piping hot, and not too strong -- a good complement to the ribs.
finally, we had the peach cobbler a la mode, which was divine. the dough was flaky, the peach was sweet and the pie had a touch of cinnamon.
it does get crowded during the lunch hour. so go right at noon or around 1 to avoid the wait.
the bill for all that was $46.
