Perfect location Mar 09, 2011
I loved staying here. It was nice and clean and had a great general area.

It is a very short walk to the train station and 2 subway lines.

If you use the train station as a point to get orientated you cannot get lost.

And I got free bike hire at J-Hoppers Hiroshima for staying.

Sorry this is the only photo I have.

*I stayed 4 nights in April 2010.

Having been to J-Hoppers in Osaka, I thought it would be a safe bet to stay at this one in Kyoto. I wasn't wrong, though maybe I could have been more adventurous you say? You'd be wrong - I tried to book a hostel or ryokan in Kyoto for several hours of searching - nada!

The hostel is about 10 minutes' walk away from Kyoto train station, that is once you actually find the right exit from the station. Kyoto station is huge and contains a couple of shopping malls as well.

Don't try and turn up between 11am/3pm to drop your luggage off - the doors will be locked. Instead - use the luggage lockers at Kyoto station for about 400Y, and go to the tourist information centre on the 9F of the station, to orient yourself.

Loads of information is supplied by the hostel about the area, including maps and events that are going on. They can also supply a day bus pass (500Y), which comes in very handy if you make more than two bus trips in a day.

There are a couple of PCs in the lobby and there is free Wi-Fi, but the signal is a bit weak on the top floors. However - go into the lounge/kitchen and you'll get fast Wi-Fi. The kitchen and lounge are one of the best I've had the pleasure of using in a hostel. There's even a guitar, if you're musically inclined. There's a beer vending machine in there as well.

I highly recommend J-Hoppers Kyoto Guest House for your next visit. It boasts a friendly and casual atmosphere within a 10 minute walk to Kyoto JR Train Station and local bus depot.

The staff is excellent. They speak English very well and are more than eager to offer up their best advice from sightseeing to local festivals to transportation. I really felt right at home here.

There offer 24 hour check-in, both private and shared rooms, and private showers. The entire guest house is very clean. They also have a fully functional living room and kitchen. You can even catch up on CNN or BBC if you like.

Besides the staff, my favorite thing about J-Hoppers were their walls which were covered in photos of past guest’s crazy adventures in Kyoto.
