One of the most ancient and important shrines in Japan Nov 02, 2013
Izumo-taisha, Izumo Shrine is one of the most ancient and important shrines in Japan. The main deity enshrined is Okuninushi. He is famous as the deity of marriage, so this shrine is popular with single women. Legend has it that all gods from all over Japan come together and attend a meeting at Izumo Shrine in November. Izumo Taisha has been rebuilt at intervals of 60 years since its construction in 1744. The 4th rebuilding of Izumo Shrine was completed this year. The rebuilding way of Izumo Shrine is different from Ise Shrine. Izumo's restoration is partial. Not only new lumbers but the exisiting lumbers were also used. The roofs of the main hall were repaired with Japanese cypress barks. According the authorities, the budget of this rebuilding cost of Izumo Shrine was 8 billion yen. Because the two famous shrines of Japan were rebuild at the same year, both cities are crowded with unprecedented tourists in 2013. Izumo is a long way from Aichi, but it was worth visiting.
