Ivano-Frankivsk Overview

Ivano-Frankivsk would sound like Ivan-Franko-City in English. It was named after the outstanding Ukrainian writer and poet of the 19th and 20th century Ivan Franko. The city got this name in 1962 and had a Polish name before: it was called Stanislaviv.
This city is considered unique due to its architecture, geographical location and facilities. The architecture of Ivano-Frankivsk incorporates both the old and the new features and harmoniously blends the present and the past.
The city history dates back to 1662 when it was mentioned for the first time. During the city's 300th anniversary, the Communist authorities renamed Stanislaviv into after Ivan Franko, a great Ukrainian poet and thinker, who had visited the city stayed there several times and had created a number of his immortal works.
The city is a well-known center in the Sub-Carpathian region. It is famous for its craftsmen such as needlewomen, weavers, wood cutters, leather and metal craftsmen. You can also visit the picturesque city environs and enjoy wonderful views of the Sub-Carpathian region.
