Ivan Franko Park Oct 04, 2017
Ivan Franko Park is one of the largest and oldest parks in Lviv and in the entire Ukraine. It is close to Dniester Hotel. Its area is about 11 hectares. This park is often called "The lungs of Lviv". Ivan Franko Park was founded in the 16th century as the city's first park. It was called Kostiushko Park in Polish times. The park is famous for its centuries-old oaks and maples still growing there. There is a huge Ivan Franko monument at the entrance to the park.

Here is a nice 3D Tour of Ivan Franko Park: http://park-franko-lviv.virtual.ua/ua/3d-tour/

The main entrance to the park from from Sich Riflemen Street ("vulytsia Sichovykh Striltsiv" in Ukrainian). This park is a monument of landscape art. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The park is home to rare trees: one of the Ukraine’s oldest Western sycamores, beech, chestnut, three-hundred-year-old oaks, giant ash trees. In addition, you can see some exotic trees from North America, the Far East, and the Mediterranean area: a tulip tree, a Manchu aralia, a catalpa, a vinegar tree, magnolias, a tree-like hydrangea, a Japanese quince.

The main alley turns into a fairy-tale road, illuminated by two lanes of lanterns conceived in Lviv style.Ivan Franko Park is an integral part of the city. It is here that natural harmony and tranquility are concentrated, here you can relax from the city rhythm. This park will fascinate you with its uniqueness, charm and mystery. I enjoyed walking through the park and admiring the exquisite composition of green plantations and architectural elements that have united in a single miracle - Ivan Franko Park.

Drop in at Ivan Franko National University located opposite Ivan Franko Park. The university began functioning in 1919 in the building constructed by Julius Hochberg in 1877-1881 for the Galician Parliament.

You can see the entrance portal in the style of classicism with two sculptural groups: Education (on the left-hand side of the entrance) and Labor (on the right-hand side).

There are three impressive allegorical figures on the attic of the entrance portal: Galicia (in the middle), (the River) Dniester on the left and (the River) Vistula on the right.

The inscription on the pediment reads, "Patriae decori civibus educandis" - "Educated citizens are the glory of the Fatherland".

You can reach the park without any difficulty by numerous minibuses (their route numbers are: 133, 184, 138, 2A, 38) and trolleybuses (routes 2, 12, 9, 10).
