Coolin and castle Jul 26, 2012
I found it hard to give a price grading. First you have to get to the island - a beautiful trip in itself. Then the Coolin are free to walk but the castle (Kinloch Castle) is quite expensive.
'Aren't the Coolin on Skye?' do I hear you say. Yes and yes, there are some on Rum as well - some individual mountains even having the same names. Howeevr, unlike Skye's magnificent Coolin, these are not Munroes (i.e. they are less than 3000 feet which means they are far less walked. They and the island generally are superb for wildlife - but unless you want to camp there's very little accommodation. Rum wss the first place in the UK to have the sea eagle reintroduced from Norway.
The castle is amazing. It is not a castle at all in the normal sense, although it was built to resemble one. It was the owner's residence and a more glaring example of conspicuous consumption you are unlikely to see anywhere. See the website for more.
