Isle Au Haut Overview

One of the larger Maine islands (six miles long by two miles wide), Isle au Haut is also one of the select few beyond Casco Bay that is inhabited...though there are currently (2014) only 38 year-round residents.

Originally hunted by Penobscot Abenaki Indians, Samuel de Champlain stumbled across the island in 1604 and bestowed the name, which translates as "high island". Truly a rare instance where the initial European name persisted through the centuries, Sam's moniker was validated during a 1614 visit by John Smith, who noted the island was the tallest in Penobscot Bay.

Fishing has long driven the island economy, dominated by lobstering in modern times. Unfortunately commercial ventures began trapping here some time ago and have made it difficult for locals to maintain a livelihood, explaining the population decline.

Today 60% of the island is part of Acadia National Park, though the beauty is largely unknown and tourism is a minor draw (though summer residents double the population).
