Islay Overview

Islay is a Scottish island off the Atlantic Coast just a couple of hours ferry ride from Loch Fyne. The island is best known for its single malt whiskey and boasts 7 working distilleries on the island that are open for tours and sales. Bowmore is the capital and the largest village.

Islay whiskey is different than the others because the local peat is used to smoke the barley in the malting process so you’ll see partially harvested peat beds across the island. Other than whiskey tours you might go here to play some golf or just enjoy some relaxed coastal living.

Ferries run regularly from the mainland every day and the local airport has a couple of flights a day to Glasgow (when it is clear enough to fly). Guesthouse and small hotels are the options for travellers and be sure to book early if you’re going at a time of festival because it can get filled up quickly!
