Islas Flotantes de los Urus Oct 28, 2010
The floating islands of the “Urus” are one of the main touristic attractions in Puno. You have to take a boat from the pier and the boat takes them to visit the floating islands of the “Urus”, where one can see how they lived and how they live these indigenous people who carry all their activities on islands built from “Totora” which is a typical plant of the Lake Titicaca, which also serves to build boats.

The disadvantage I see in this tour is that it has become very touristy and what they do is take tourists to the lakes islands just so they can shop for handicrafts.

An interesting tour to walk around Lake Titicaca, these floating islands are also found near Copacabana - Bolivia also in a tourist form, while actually were authentic Urus and which are disappearing is in the Poopo Lake is located in Oruro Bolivia, where the “Urus” were an ethnic group very old.

I never got to go here when I was in Peru/Bolivia. I heard that it was very tourist driven as well, so I gave it a skip. I did however go to Isla del Sol which was the most amazing place. At least I have a reason to go back to Lake Titicaca! Great review!
