Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is a small island 5 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula. No one knows the origin of the island’s name but there are several theories including: a pilgrimage sight for ancient Mayan women; a tribute to the Mayan Goddess Ix Chel (a ruin to Ix Chel is on the island); because of the countless statues of women found on the island by Spanish explorers; and because pirates used to stash their women on the island.
A ferry from Puerto Juarez in downtown Cancun leaves to the island every 30-minutes as do other private carriers. This fishing village has a slow and relaxed pace – especially compared to Cancun. Attractions include Punta Sur, with a sculpture garden, small Maya temple, and the Cliff of the Dawn (the eastern-most point in Mexico). El Garrafon National Underwater Park is also located at the south end of the island. Several dive shops are available to lead scuba excursions to the many excellent dive locations around the island, and trips can also be booked to Contoy Island, a bird sanctuary.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt...
This was my last day on Isla; and in fact, my last day of the trip full stop - but I couldn't think about it, I just couldn't. The last couple of days had taken me through some sort of time warp... it had seemed much longer than that, and yet I was no where near ready to return home.
I woke up quite late after the late night of drinking the night before - but once I did wake up, I luckily felt completely fine. I immediately ...

We have now arrived at our first destination, the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres. Our plane left Detroit around 7:30 for Cancun, which we stomached for about 5 minutes before leaving Puerto Juarez for a 25 minutes ferry to the Island of Women. The Poc-Na hostel was just a short walk from the dock, which was welcome considering the size of our bags and the amount of sleep we were working on. We heard that the Poc-na was ¨the¨place to stay, and i´d say that i would agree ...

Women's Island With a name like that, it has to be good, right? Well, the name comes from some Mayan goddess figurines found on the south of the island by the Spanish. But enough culture - it was the last three days, so party and beach time. I met up again with a chap called Tim who I met briefly in Tulum, inbetween bouts of extreme coughing and general illness. And Tim had acquired some Danish companions - more of which later... Travbuddies and Couchsurfers So,&nbs...
