When you visit the beautiful country of Costa Rica and realize food is much more expensive than you originally accounted for, you have a few options. You can try your luck with the "sodas" or lunch counters (highly recommended), go to a MasXMenos and buy some of the fare you know how to cook, chum up with a native, or eat at the local bars. The Isaga Bar was recommended by an Aussie that worked at the first restaurante we tried (The Fish Bone) in Jaco. We knew that if we were to survive the week and purchase a pound or 20 of coffee, we would have to cut our meals down to once a day (not ever an option for a foodie) or start to catch our dinner. The Isaga helped feed us and one of the bar staff who spoke better English than all of our Spanish put together, took us under his wing. As his "friends" he enticed us to stay for the "chow" or as we like to remember-the elaborate demonstration of drinking iceless beer. As we were already members of that train of thought (who puts ice in their beer, anyway?) they seemed to dote on us and give us free goodies. So not only did the Isaga help us stay within our food budget, they also provided plenty shwag that we gave to others as a momento of our good times.
