Northern but tropical Sep 01, 2010
Northern - not just in the northern country of Scotland but well to the north-west of it. Tropical - not the air temperatures but an effect of the Gulf Stream. The garden was the creation of Osgood McKensie and one of my favourite websites,http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk

(/poolewe/inverewe/ in tis particular case) tells how, when he fenced off the area, there was only ONE paltry tree in the area!

Now the garden is owned by the Natonal Trust for Scotland and gets about 200,000 visitors a year. You might as well read the description on the website. That will tell you of the sumptuous walled garden, the bamboozelum, the rock garden, the pond garden and wet area and the superb views.

Plants from a number of tropical areas grow here. The Gulf Stream is responsible for a lot but it could not have induced these growths had not McKensie had the money to import a mass of soil.

Inverewe Gardens Jul 27, 2010
Inverewe Gardens are a beautiful set of gardens that, because of hard work and the gulf stream, have some really amazing plants that don't normally grow this far north. The setting is wonderful, right on the edge of Loch Ewe, and the gardens are lovely.

There are semi-formal rose terraces and lots of woodland walks to explore. I'm sure there is lots of interesting wildlife - the website mentions Pine Martens which are very rare, but obviously, they didn't pop out to introduce themselves to a noisy tourist like me.

This is a really beautiful place. There is, of course, a pricey admission fee and a gift shop, but it is worthwhile.

Once we went to hte ca park on the road from Torridon to Inver Alligin and Diabaig. Tho pine martens were running around - the only time I have ever seen them.
