A touch of the Antartic Sep 04, 2008
On our last day we decided to spend time at the Antartic Centre. It is close to the airport so there were people that were flying out in the afternoon that would spend the morning here before heading to the airport.
The centre has a lot of displays to show what life would be like if you decided to spend time in the antartic. There is a "Blizzard" room. You put on a jacket and slip on rubber boots before entering. It is set up with an igloo etc and then the "blizzard" begins! I was glad when it was over but wow, how would you take it for a prolonged time? There is also a fantastic penguin pool. You can stand and look down at the pool or go around the other side and watch the penquins diving. One of the optional extra costs is the Hagglund ride. Again, it gives you an idea of the mode of transport but can become a bit hair raising. ( That is, for whoooses like me ). We did enjoy our few hours there. It is very informative. The Centre takes you through an amazing journey of Antarctica... from the forms of transportation critical… In New Zealand! |
