A great old characterful hotel full for hikers and Irishmen Mar 29, 2014
N43°39.824' W72°49.997' Built in 1938 as the ski lodge "Long Trail Chalet", this hotel now serves thru-hikers on the Appalachian and Long Trail and homesick Irishmen on route 4 between Killington and Pico. Two themes are all present in the Inn: hiking and Ireland.

The Inn is a temporary home and clubhouse to hikers pausing along the nearby Appalachian and Long Trail. The lounge is full of memorabilia of earlier hikers, who mark their hometowns on a map of the USA. Every newspaper article about successes and failures of AT/LT hikers is collected. Hikers camp on the meadow on the other side of the road or treat themselves in the hotel with a proper bed, shower, meals and clean clothes. And of course compare notes with other hikers, brag about their speed, progress and endured hardship and complain about the behaviour of day- and slack-hikers and mice in shelters.

Inside the Inn is the McGrath's Irish Pub from the McGrath family, innkeepers since 1977. The pub walls resemble an Irish museum about triumph and struggle of the Irish people. On tap is Guinness, which we enjoyed very much along their Irish pub menu. Their menu is much closer in taste and size to Europe. Burgers, pasta’s and soups were nutritious and tasty. On Thursday the pub warms up for the live music on Friday and Saturday. During weekends the hotel is populated with returning visitors.

Our corner room 23 on the first floor during a two-night stay in August 2013 was at the front of the hotel, close to the road. Without air conditioner we slept with open windows. The noise from the road during the night was acceptable, but heavy traffic in the morning made us wake early. The room itself is what you expect from an old building: clean but dated. No fridge, TV and only reliable Wi-Fi reception downstairs. The stream of warm water to the shower was erratic en needed constant adjustment. The breakfast with eggs, omelettes, bacon and orange juice compensated tasted excellent.

What the hotel misses in mod cons is compensated by the rustic decor and authentic atmosphere, absent in modern uniform hotel chains. Staff was more than helpful in all our request. The resident hippy caretaker joked all the time. Clearly, they care about their guest. Very recommended if you want to get away from motel and hotel chains.
