Inka Rest Apr 03, 2011
It was really early when I arrived from Cusco to Puno. Sleepy town was not only empty but super cold, which is kind of expected on that attitude. Did not have any map, no reservation, and only thing that I could tell paddle-taxi driver is to take me to hostel that I read about day before.

We got to the strange dark alley, and only thing that made me a bit comfortable was bright signs calling it for a hostel place. All places look like fortresses with iron doors, bars, locks… and those doors give up loud noise when you bang on them (especially at the 4am). Very sleepy guy opened the door for me with the smile, I paid the driver, and got in, just to get in the trouble for not having the reservation.

That guy was the owner, I think French guy, and after saying that he does not have any space for me, he let me rest in the general area of the hostel until the day comes and he checks if there is a space or not.

Luckily there was one room available in the morning so I took it with only one thing in my mind… to sleep… I got private room on the first floor. There are few floors with rooms, and the place is constantly expending as owner is making it larger and taller. Place is a bit rough outside, and a bit nicer inside, but it is perfectly fine, clean and friendly. Hostel is located close to the center, markets, Titicaca port, hospital and you do not really need taxi to go anywhere (bicycle taxis are super cheap and pretty fast).

Room is clean with nice beds, places to lock your things, but mine was a bit dark and only window was looking at the communal area. Restrooms have hot water (very important) and they are fairly clean. There is breakfast in the morning with must-have coca tea. Communal area has TV, video, wifi and few computers that you can use for free. Owners are super nice, helpful and it was pleasure meeting them.

I had to get Bolivian visa, and there is small consulate in the town that is experience for itself, but you can finish all papers in one day. Large market is on the streets few blocks from the hostel, but also there is nice city market also close by. Visiting Urosh people on Titicaca Lake is very touristic, and they do everything so that you spend some money with them. Puno is small town, but in the area there are many Inca, and few older civilizations ruins and places of interest.

Bus station is around five larger blocks from hostel, and it is new and well built. There are lots of bus companies that offer transportation to Bolivia, Copacabana or to Cusco, but you should get there on your free time, check the time table, and maybe buy the ticket.

I do recommend this place as a good hostel to stay in Puno.

This was the most amazing hostel I have ever stayed at. Honestly, it was like visiting old friends. The owner, Alfredo, and his wife were both extremely friendly and welcoming. They were ready to help book any tours you would like of Lake Titicaca and also they helped arrange transportation from the hostel to the bus depo. On both nights, we had the pleasure of being able to eat with them. Truly a home away from home! At night, they would ask what time you were waking up and would have breakfast waiting when you did. They offered great advice and conversation. I definitely recommend this!!!!
