Indoor market at Urubamba
Indoor market at Urubamba Reviews
Perfect way to experience the local food market Nov 21, 2008
We stumbled into this amazing indoor local market a couple blocks from the city center. The inside was a colorful explosion of food and people. It was filled with fresh produce in sacks – potatoes, onions, peppers, tomatoes, corn, squash, carrots and more. One corner held cheeses, another fruit, meats, fish, baskets. The main shoppers were women dressed in traditional wool skirts and sweater with hair tied back in long braids and hats on their heads. School children gathered to help their mothers sell produce or watch their younger siblings. Women shopped, bartered and gossiped. I only saw two other white people in there.
It was an amazing place to see Peruvian culture with locals going about their daily business and ignoring the few tourists. The large building was open in the center but had about three levels ringing the center with additional wares for sale or hidden people watching. It was completely indoors and away from the elements, making it a slightly more permanent market area. If you have an hour or so in Urubamba, it is definitely worth your time to stroll through here.
