Indianapolis Blue Star Memorial Highway Reviews
Fitting Tribute to the United States Armed Forces May 08, 2011
The Indianapolis Blue Star Highway is part of the Blue Star Highways of the United States. These are highways marked as part of a tribute to the armed forces who have fallen in the defense of their country. The Garden Club of Indiana takes care of this highway. The highway in Indianapolis stands at the southeast corner of the intersection at Meridian Street and North street. The highway project was adopted in 1946 and is a fitting addition to the impressive collection of war memorials that are found on this stretch of city blocks that comprise the Indiana War Memorial National Historic District.
I was impressed by the memorials on this highway. It does speak of the evils of war and how much the land cries out about how evil war is. As impressive as the memorials are, they are nothing but a representation of the evils of war. It seems that the memorials have become bigger with each generation. The idea of the Blue Star began in 1944 when the New Jersey state council of Gardens decided to clean up a large stretch of the US highway 22 from Mountainside to North Plainfield in honor of the armed forces. The eight thousand dogwood trees planted as a living memorial for the fallen women and men of the armed forces of New Jersey, set a precedence for other states to do the same.
The highway in Indianapolis is lined with the World War I and II memorials, and the Vietnam and Korean Wars. Quite something to see. The history is engraved on the difference memorials, some even have letters from soldiers who fought in Korea and Vietnam. My heart was heavy as I read the letter and the many names engraved on the memorial stones. Highly recommended.
