Visited Sikasar Dam, the nearest dam from the Raipur city. As for me, that's not just another dam, it's the most beautiful dam i've ever seen. I really feel it's uniqueness and hope that someday it will be promoted as part of tourist attraction of the state. Please feel free to view my Sikasar Dam exploration gallery @ http://travel.webshots.com/album/557925846PALpcK

Arriving at Kolkata station was an experience. It was 6am - and the light as we travelled slowly into Kolkata was beautiful- and atmospheric. But as I got off the train - the usual mayhem. I averted my eyes from the people having a poo on the tracks, then tried to fend off the many porters who swarmed at me as I tried to walk along the platform. C'mon - my backpack was on my back - what did they expect from me?Then, as I approached the taxi stand (the number of yellow cars parked there was tr...

I teach a class, none of whom speak any English but we're getting there. My hindi so far consists of sit down and be quiet! we're having lessons though, so hopefully i...

Bombay Day 1
posted by:
Sep 30, 2007 - Oct 07, 2007
at last arrived India.  As the pilot was announcing our arrival to Mumbai India, I was trying to get a glimpse of Mumbai from the plane.  I could see lights across the country, the piece of land covered with glittering lights somehow looks really vast, at a point where I was confused if I was looking up to the sky or looking down staring at the city of Mumbai. As soon as I grab my luggage from the rotating luggage claim counter I felt relieved from the long day travelling, alt...

Chennai, India
posted by:
Aug 08, 2007 - Aug 12, 2007
On the way back to Chennai George stopped at the hill where the original church was located where St. Thomas had been buried. It also offered a wonderful view over Chennai, which turned out to be much bigger than I had expected. After visiting the chapel with the 'bleeding cross' that had been found nearby, he also showed me the street in a nearby neighbourhood in which he lived. After this he dropped me off at the Rain Tree so I could get some lunch, since it was already around half past 3. ...

Whoa! New Delhi and India are an experience.  After some in our group chose to immunize themselves from some possible bugs, we found ourselves standing in line at Customs and Immigrations surrounded by mosquitos. I did not get immunized, I couldn't donate blood for a year after our return. We were swatting mosquitoes left and right. Once we made it through we again found ourselves in a predicament. We may have been the cause though; we went to two different taxicab desks and asked f...

Gokarn

Gokarn (the cow's ear). 5am. The beach, one of theholiest pilgrimage sights for Hindus. Birthplace of their diety, Shiva. Cows everywhere. Every morning at daybreak men with painted foreheads, wearingblack lungies (skirts), shirtless and barefoot would pile out of s.u.v.'s, with the most obnoxious sounding air horns, to bathe in the holywaters. One main street runs through town and is lined with small resturants, internet cafes, tailors, fabric shops, vegie stands and such. Throughout the stre...

Dec ’05 - Jan ‘06  From the moment I stepped into the country, every sense was overloaded.     Everything was foreign… new sights, new smells, new sounds, new feelings, new tastes.  Of course, it was to be expected and yet it was nothing like we expected.      Not worse, not better, just different.  I’ve realized that India cannot be compared to a country like America.  It just isn’t fair.  The vibranc...

Welcome to India!  We are in Chennai (Madras) and it's 34 degrees and stinking.  Rick is trying to convince me that peeing on the wall in the main street is now acceptable.  It does not take long to integrate! We have been here for one night and have already seen all kinds of strange things. WE are currently on a city tour which cost 70 rupees (about $2) and is all day.  We are skipping this section.  We have already been to two temples.  All the other people on...
