I have been riding quads for a long time and I love everything about it! You can go as fast as you want, do crazy jumps, climb huge hills and get very very dirty! The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest sand dunes open to off-highway vehicle use in the United States. They have 4 designated camping areas; Glamis, Gordons Well, Buttercup, and Ogilby. My favorite place to camp is Gordans Well. Gordans Well is about 45 min. off highway 8 but well worth the extra drive. It normally is not quite as crowed but have some amazing rides. The dunes near Gordans Well are not as sharp making for a smoother ride and not quite as dangerous... but still very fun!
The fun really starts at night. Most people ride over to the bottom of Competition Hill to enjoy the bomb fires and watch or join in on the races up the enormous hill. After the party at the hill ends everyone goes back to their camp to sit around a camp fire with some good friends. The best times to go to the Imperial Sand Dunes is from Halloween to Easter. During those months the average temp is between 60-70 degrees (perfect). Otherwise it is way to hot!! |

I learned how to ride a quad, and chased jason through the dunes throughout the day. He is fast, and he scaled and leaped those monumental sand hills as though carried on a peregrin. I watched in awe, as i felt my own muscles aching… Riding through the Imperial Sand Dunes |
