Iloilo City is a first class city located in the central island of Panay in the Visayas, and was an important port of call since the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Iloilo is the gateway to the tourism rich province of Guimaras, known for its beaches and mangoes.
As the city faces Iloilo Strait and Guimaras Island just across, it is a natural harbor which provides safe anchorage for ships. Much of the city is subdivided into former towns by many rivers, and grew as land reclaimed from the swampy areas as a result of urbanization and industrialization.
It is the hub of the shipping industry in Western Visayas, a historical center with academic institutions dating back to the 1800s.
