Igrejas Carmelitas Carmo Porto Reviews
Interesting set of churches Nov 26, 2010
Although this is one review, it relates to two churches which are in very close proximity to each other (ie, Carmelitas and Carmo).
There appears to be some religious law or doctrine which states that that walls of two churches cannot meet each other. Therefore, to keep these churches apart, a house was built in between them. The house is the narrowest in Lisbon, and arguably in Portugal too. It was said to have been last inhabited at least 20 years ago, and I can't imagine any more than one person living in there!
The churches themselves are nice enough. Both attract a regular and sizeable amount of worshippers, and the artwork and interiors are stunning to look at. There are tiles on the exterior too, which adorn the walls to create a really nice piece of art.
However, the real attraction of these churches is the little house that is in between them!
