Shiny baroque Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus Aug 17, 2009
This church is located in Old Town, just 2 blocks away from Pza. Grande. As most of the churches in town it's from the Colony times and with baroque style.
From the outside it doesn't look that spectacular, besides of the domes which look gorgeous at night. But once you go inside things are different. As a good baroque sample the decoration is heavy, many colors specially red and golden. There are many religious art work, paintings, sculptures, besides the altar and pulpit itself. Don't forget to take a close look at the ceilings, amazing work. But don't need to be with your neck up the whole time, there's a mirror which would make things easier. We were making fun of the fact when they polish it here, they should were sunglasses. Almost everything here is made of gold or had pieces of it! So shiny!!! There's also an exhibition of the bells of the church and you can learn about how they build the churches and see some of the original painting of the walls too. This one was the only church I had to pay a fee to go inside, but it's so cheap. Here are the fees: Locals: Adults: US$1 - I was charged as a local, hehe Students: US$1.00 Foreigners: Adults: US$2.00 Students: US$1.00 It's free for children under 6 years old and people over 60. First Sunday each month they don't charge fee to anyone. Definitely, it's recommended to visit this place if you are in Quito and want to see some of the Colony art. To me, Quito was less than impressive, it seemed to be the charmless result of the aftermath of the collision between the old and the new. Don´t get me wrong, there are still plenty of cultural remnants relegated to the numerous museums. There are …… In the valley of Quito |
