Idi Hotel Zaros Reviews
Relaxing hotel in the most gorgeous part of Crete Aug 10, 2014
On the slopes of Mount Psiloritis, Idi Hotel really has the most beautiful location one could hope for. The village of Zaros, a short distance of which the hotel is situated, is famous for its water. Whereas anywhere else on the island chloric is added to the tap water, the water in this village, and thus also in the hotel, is amazingly sweet natural mineral water. Not only does it flow from the taps, but it comes out of the walls everywhere - in the hot August weather, it's the most amazing thing to try!
The lush amount of water also means that Zaros is an oasis in what seems to be a very dry landscape. Idi Hotel makes the landscape flourish even more by keeping an amazing garden with loads of trees, plants and bushes. The trees provide lots of shade, under which you can just drag a sun bed and enjoy the warmth even at the hottest times. The sun beds themselves are provided by the hotel, so you can just sit back and relax!
Situated in the garden is also the swimming pool. Very simple, but very refreshing nonetheless!
The rooms were very simple. The mattresses felt very hard, but surprisingly enough, we slept perfectly on them. The bathroom was tiny, but clean. In the morning however, the shower was freezing cold. Later on the day the water would get warm, but then it would be impossible to get cold water. Very inconvenient.
Also very inconvenient was that the toilet didn't flush very well. It may take a couple of tries to get it done...
Also we had received word that the towels would be changed after three days, but to be fairly honest, we never saw any change in them. I did get a new towel after I used mine to cover up some glass splinters after dropping a glass in our room, but other than that, they weren't changed.
On the other hand, the air conditioning worked like a charm, the floors were cleaned regularly and the trash was taken out daily. Overall a good place to take an afternoon nap or catch your breath after a while in the sun.
Breakfast at Idi Hotel was pretty average. I was a bit disappointed that it was exactly the same every day, but it was still pretty decent. Everything was nice and fresh. There were cereals, bread (and a most devilish toaster), fresh fruits, Greek yoghurt which combined magnificently with the homemade marmelades, and my personal favourite: mountain tea. The first time you try it it may taste a little strange, but when you get used to it it's delicious! As far as I could gather it's made with herbs from the mountain itself, which I am very willing to believe because all over the mountain the scent of this tea can be smelled. Absolutely delicious.
The staff was also pretty decent. We didn't have a lot to do with them and they didn't seem too talkative, but they were overall very nice. On the last day we had to catch the 6:50 bus to the airport, and one of them gave us a ride down to Zaros. Very much appreciated!
The only thing that really disappointed me was what I also liked best: the location. As I have said before, it's a gorgeous place. A lot of nature, a nice temperature, a bright starry sky at night, and most of all: the mountains. At about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel, there's the cute but small Zaros Lake. Definitely worth a stroll around it.
Along the banks of the lake you can find stairs up to the mountain. Eventually it'll take you over the mountain to the canyon. It's an amazingly beautiful walk, but barely doable in the hot August sun! The signs say it's about a 4 kilometre walk, but the inaccessible mountain paths make it feel much more than that. We took 2,5 litres of water but had to turn around half way because we were almost through. It's stunningly beautiful so I would definitely recommend to try it, but do so with care!
Overall it's a gorgeous hotel to just relax, enjoy the sun, enjoy the food and occasionally go out for a stroll to see Crete's beautiful nature. I will definitely go back there to recharge my batteries once more!
