The Peace Beacon of Iceland Oct 10, 2010
While in Iceland, I did go to see the world famous Light Tower that was built in honor of late singer John Lennon by his widow Yoko Ono. On Saturday, October 9th, Yoko Ono was in Reykjavik to celebrate what would be her late husband's 70th birthday. The event included the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono band performance. Since I did not join in the commemoration that began the night before, I decided I wanted to see the commemorative peace light, what would be the eternal flame if you will. Of course this light does not stay on year in and out, it runs once a year from october through December only.

In 2007, Yoko Ono called upon the whole world to imagine living life in peace as she unveiled the tower of light in Reykjavik in memory of her late husband John Lennon. John Lennon would have been 67 years old in 2007 had he lived. Yoko and Ringo Starr, the Beatles drummer lit up the chill night with the broad shaft of blue light as about 200 people sang along with Lennon's song "Imagine," playing in the background. The light tower is referred to as the "Imagine Peace Tower," , it is a light sculpture created by Yoko Ono, and it illuminates the sky of the Icelandic capital each year from Lennon's birthday until December 8, the anniversary of his murder in New York in 1980. Yoko Ono said then that the light should serve as a beacon to the world to pause and image peace prevailing.

The Imagine Peace Tower is powered purely by geothermal energy which is plentiful in Iceland. It is said that Yoko chose Iceland because of it's natural state and beauty. Of the many beautiful countries of the world, only Iceland has 80% of it's energy provided by natural source – geothermal energy. Highly recommended is this tower. The night light surely beacons for peace, something to marvel at. A must see.
