Ibis Goteborg City Gothenburg Reviews
A journey on the boat Mar 26, 2012
To my surprise, the Ibis Goteborg city is actually a real boat, located quietly on the river, a bit off the center. Even though it's only about a kilometer's walk from the center and the central station, the area is not too pleasant (it's a business area that is deserted at night) to walk through after dark. A taxi from the central station sets you back about a 100 crowns.
Staying on a real boat adds an extra charm to the hotel. Upon entering there's a small but pleasant reception area. The girl at check-in was very nice but not most efficient. It took a while to get the room as there seemed to be some problem with the computer system. Wifi is not included in the room rate, but I bought a voucher for 8 hour access at reception for about 85 crowns. That's ok since my company was paying for the stay and I needed to get some work done, but I wouldn't pay for the access if I were travelling for leisure.
My room - or shoud I say cabin - was on fhe ground floor. I got a room to the back overlooking the river. Being on a boat, the room was very small, barely fitting a double bed, a desk and a tiny bathroom with shower. The shower itself could have been cleaner and the window towards the water hadn't been washed for decades, but other than that, the room was ok for Ibis standards. There was a wooden floor and extra duvets and pillows. There were no toiletries but a soap dispenser in the shower and at the sink; which is more eco friendly anyway.
On top of the double bed, there's a fold-out bunk bed, useful in case you'd be travelling with kids. Though seen the size of the room, there's hardly any manouvering space, should you use it as a family room.
Breakfast is served in the completely renovated breakfast room annex restaurant and bar. Even though it says continental buffet, there's a nice selection of eggs, cold cuts, rolls, bread and jam. There's also cereal and yoghurt as well as sweet pastry, juice and of course coffee and tea. In my opinion there's ample choice to start the day.
I didn't use the restaurant at night, but on the menu there seemed to be plenty of choice for reasonabe prices.
Even though the hotel is not in the very center, on the plus side it is quiet at night. The small room didn't bother me that much and I liked the charm of being on a boat. Since I was going to the exhibition in the Svenska Mässe, I needed to take a taxi anyway. So all in all it's good value for money but the rooms are more suited for solo travelers than for couples or families.
