Good value & great location May 20, 2011
With basic rooms and a great location, this hotel was perfect for my off-season trip to Edinburgh. Many of the key tourist sites (Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish Parliament), as well as the main bus/train station are within easy walking distance. I even found several ghost tours departing from around the corner.

The room was clean and efficient – TV, bed, towels, closet and a desk. At first I was concerned about how comfortable the bed was going to be with only a single mattress, but I slept great for my entire stay. Don’t expect extras like shampoo or body lotion, though there was a soap dispenser in the shower. The lobby was bright, and I liked that I was able to get a glass of wine from the bar to enjoy while I checked email from one of the lobby computers. (Note – you have to pay for use of the computers.) I didn’t eat at the restaurant, preferring to start my day with a vanilla crème from the Starbucks next door.

Whether it was due to it being the off-season or a general change in the area, I didn’t have any of the ASBO/noise/late-night partying issues mentioned in the first review. I’d definitely stay here on a future trip to Edinburgh and would recommend this hotel to others as well.

Ibis, Edinburgh Centre May 05, 2008
In the heart of Edinburgh, an affordable, pretty secure, very basic room directly on the Royal Mile, only a 5 minute walk (downhill!) to Waverley Station (or 5 minutes uphill FROM Waverley, DOH!!!)

Right on Hunter Square... oops wait that's not a plus. Can you say "ASBO"? I couldn't, until the Mercat ghost tour lady mentioned it enough times that I had to ask... so oh, you mean those pink-haired kids out in the square all night shouting and laughing from dusk to dawn and constantly climbing on the infant tree right in front of our hotel? The Anti-Social-Behavioral-Order kids? Yeah, that's the ones.

Aside from that it's a good basic hotel, tidy, very polite, helpful and almost apologetic staff, you might want to ask for a room toward the back instead of overlooking the square. Opposite the ASBO's to your left, you'll find a nightclub to your right with plenty of police action and all-night puking on the front step, and that's only on a weeknight. Back side of hotel people, are you listening?
Very basic bed
TV
Lots of police action
