Ibis Birmingham Airport Reviews
A very complacent hotel May 18, 2012
We booked this hotel primarily because of its location. There were five of us attending a trade show for 3 days at the nearby National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Our first choice, the Novotel next door was fully booked so the Ibis it was.
There are three 'Accor' hotels on this site, the Novotel, Ibis and Etap and all are located directly opposite Birmingham International Airport from where a free monorail shuttle operates into the NEC. This is just a ninety second ride and highlights why this is such a great location for those attending the NEC or using the airport.
The problems started on check in. Firstly they had no record of our booking and a very moody receptionist told us to wait ten minutes until the girl who took the booking arrived on shift. By the time she did there was a very long queue and we had to join at the back. Eventually thirty minutes later, with no sign of an apology, the problem was sorted and we were issued with our rooms.
However, after making our way upstairs we all discovered that our key cards were not working. A couple of the group made their way back down stairs while the rest of us waited with the bags. Frustratingly this was repeated 4 times before eventually the keys worked. Again the receptionists, who admittedly were very busy, offered no apology and were very surly. This routine would be repeated every day as the key cards consistently failed to work.
Once in the room I discovered a small but clean room with a view of the monorail and car park. There was a small flat panel TV, a reasonably comfortable double bed and wood finish floor with no carpet. The tiny modular bathroom was of a 'wet room' design but had a decent sized shower. There was a very unpleasant smell of drains coming from the sink outlet.
Wi-fi is an extra at £9.99 per 24 hours and there is no gym. The car park opposite in actually quite a trek, especially with bags, as the pedestrian route to the hotel is rather convoluted. The buffet breakfast was satisfactory with a selection of hot or cold food.
The cost of the room at £120 per night was extortionate for this standard of hotel and if located anywhere else they would not get away with it. However Accor clearly understand the concept of supply and demand and the hotel was full. They also tried to charge us additionally for breakfast on checking out but luckily we had proof that our rate included breakfast.
It seems that the management are happy to take guests cash on the strength of the location without much effort put into the experience they offer. Not recommended unless other hotels are full.
